ANS African Neurophysiology Educational Conference 21st to 23rd September 2023

The conference, themed ‘The future of Neurophysiology and Epilepsy in Africa’ was targeted primarily at bringing together Neurophysiology practitioners across Africa. It was also a platform for interaction between this group and the various practitioners in the field of neurology, more particularly epilepsy care; namely: Neurologists, Clinicians, Nurses, Epilepsy Advocates, and other stakeholders including relevant government policy makers, regulatory bodies, people living with epilepsy, manufacturers and entrepreneurs involved in the management of epilepsy and other neurological conditions. Besides creating awareness of the critical role neurophysiologists play and being an interactive forum, the conference was biased towards upskilling epilepsy management, and to a lesser extent, other neurological disorders in the area of neurophysiology. The specially selected 22 conference speakers and the participants were drawn from these associated groups. The conference attracted 62 delegates drawn from over 10 countries of Africa. It was also graced by friends of ANS from other countries outside Africa, from USA and UK.

The conference theme was broken down into three sub-themes namely: the challenges of neurophysiology practice in Africa, the way forward in diagnosis and management of seizures and epilepsy in Africa, and advanced neurophysiology practices. These were each further sub-divided into three topical sessions handled by three different speakers after which, open interactive plenary sessions between session speakers and the audience were conducted. The major outcome of the conference was a 10-Point draft declaration, dabbed “The Nairobi Declaration of the Second African Neurophysiological Society Conference: Shaping the Future of Neurophysiology and Epilepsy in Africa”. The 10 declarations included: Commitment to collaboration among Society members, Raising public awareness on neurological conditions, Capacity building in neurophysiology education, Research and Innovation involvement in the field of neurophysiology, Improving the quality of care in diagnosis and management of epilepsy patients, Healthcare infrastructure advocacy, Strengthening global partnerships with relevant entities, Stressing on educational programs for neurophysiology practitioners, Commitment to advocating for policies regarding our practice and Affirmation of our commitment to the ideals of the African Neurophysiological Society.
